To compete in a global economy, to improve the quality of life in our communities, and to realize the full potential of our state, Louisiana must elevate the educational attainment of its citizens. Reinvestment is essential. The returns on that reinvestment, channeled through an enterprise more focused on a strategic mission than ever before, will be immeasurable.
The Universities of Louisiana have committed to producing the most educated and prepared generation in our state’s history, expanding research efforts and public/private partnerships that drive our economy, and investing in the faculty that drive our work.
The For Our Future Conference will draw a wide range of faculty and staff to assemble to collaborate and strategize in the following four tracks:
Advocacy, Policy, Communications and Marketing
In 2018, the Universities of Louisiana were present throughout three legislative sessions with a goal of securing stable funding for higher education and fulfillment of the TOPS promise. Through the efforts of our presidents, faculty, staff, students and alumni via social media, visits to the capitol, and a successful ULS Day, we achieved that goal for the first time in nearly a decade. With a promise of a few years of stability ahead of us, how do we approach advocating for strategic reinvestment in the coming years? How do we reach policymakers and overcome national rhetoric against higher education? How can we work to further capitalize on our collective strengths to place our System in a better position politically? How can we promote a unified message? How do we respond to communication crises via traditional or social media? How can we ensure our management board policies are effective and do not create unnecessary barriers?
Access, Diversity and Adult Learners
Universities that aspire to prepare students from all backgrounds for leadership, service and learning should be reflective of those students. How do we reach students that have been historically underserved, including those with lower participation and success rates and those from non-traditional backgrounds? How do we expand services to ensure the success of traditionally underserved populations? How can we adapt to educate more people to meet the needs of the rapidly advancing 21st century economy?
Stewardship, Data, Open Educational Resources and Transparency
State funding for higher education is stable for the first time in a decade positioning the Universities of Louisiana for a period of unprecedented growth. However, when making up for a decade of state disinvestment, the brunt of the burden has been placed on the students. How can we work to make the college experience more affordable for students? How can we utilize open educational resources and other tools to reduce student costs? How do we articulate the value of higher education? How can we be more transparent?
Student Services, Student Success, Academic Support and Trending Topics on Campus
We are committed to producing the most educated generation in Louisiana history. Today’s students face distinct challenges that require unique and creative solutions. How can we maximize our efforts to retain students? How can we adapt traditional teaching methods to reach the modern student? How do we address hot button issues including hazing and free speech infringement?
As you can see, the program for the second annual For Our Future Conference promises engaging dialogue and empowering development opportunities as we pursue a new era of reinvestment in our work.
