ULM to Host UL System Academic Summit Next Week

MONROE, LA. – Faculty, staff and students from the University of Louisiana System’s nine universities will come together Friday and Saturday, April 12 and 13, on the University of Louisiana at Monroe campus for the system’s second annual Academic Summit.   The two-day event will include an entire day focused on service-learning, a performance art showcase, a visual art exhibition and reception, and a second day focused on undergraduate research.

“This two-day conference showcases academic excellence across our nine universities.  Having just joined the UL System in January, I particularly look forward to listening to our students and employees present their work, learning from our national speakers, and getting to know conference attendees as we celebrate innovative learning,” said UL System President Sandra Woodley.

Friday’s focus on service-learning will feature keynote speaker Dr. Lorilee Sandmann from the University of Georgia.  Sandmann will share her national research on recipients of the Carnegie Foundation’s Community Engagement Classification.

Thirty-eight service-learning presenters will showcase community impact projects in diverse areas such as disaster planning, urban planning, gerontology, chemistry, fundraising, marketing, foreign languages, and history.  Those breakout presentations will be followed by concurrent panel discussions on beginning and advanced issues by the UL System Service-Learning Council.

Art will be the focus of Friday evening activities starting with a new performance art showcase.  This exciting hour will feature 18 undergraduate student musicians and thespians with one performance from each university.  Following will be a reception and a visual art exhibition with 42 pieces of student artwork selected by each of the nine campuses.

Saturday’s focus on undergraduate research will feature presentations by 119 students, a keynote presentation by ULM faculty member Dr. Ann Findley, and a faculty development session by Dr. Iain Crawford from the University of Delaware.  Crawford chairs the Arts and Humanities Division of the national Council on Undergraduate Research and will talk about how to expand undergraduate research beyond the sciences.

Attendees must register online and pay registration fees at www.ulm.edu/summit.  However, the faculty development session with Crawford on Saturday is free and open to all interested faculty members.

“The University of Louisiana at Monroe is proud to host the 2013 University of Louisiana System Academic Summit. The Academic Summit, which attracts scholars from all nine universities in the UL System, provides an excellent opportunity for intellectual exchange,” said ULM President Dr. Nick J. Bruno.

Below is the schedule at-a-glance for the two-day event.  The full Academic Summit program and list of presenters will be available next week at www.ulm.edu/summit
