Northwestern State University

Northwestern State University was established in 1884 as Louisiana’s Normal School, dedicated to the training of teachers. Its location in historic Natchitoches is the oldest continually occupied site for higher education in Louisiana.

Over the years, the curriculum and degree offerings expanded to include a full range of undergraduate and graduate degrees until the school was renamed Northwestern State University in 1970.
