Resolution Honoring Johnny McFerren
WHEREAS, Mr. John “Johnny” Clinton McFerren, Jr. was appointed to the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System to represent the 4th Congressional District by The Honorable Governor John Bel Edwards on March 17, 2017; and
WHEREAS, he was appointed by the Chair as a member of the Academic and Student Affairs, Grievance, and Legislation Committees on that Board; and
WHEREAS, he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in Education from Northwestern State University and took great pride in being a Northwestern alumnus; and
WHEREAS, Mr. McFerren early in his career utilized his higher education to become a classroom teacher in Caddo Parish; and
WHEREAS, he was elected to the Caddo Parish School Board and enjoyed twelve years of service in that capacity; and
WHEREAS, he was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives for four terms and served from 1980 until 1996; and
WHEREAS, Mr. McFerren was honored to serve as Chairman of the House Education Committee from 1992 until 1996; and
WHEREAS, Mr. McFerren was diligent in his service to the State of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, he was an entrepreneur, being the founder and owner of Johnny’s Catfish and Seafood in Shreveport and owner of McFerren Real Estate; and
WHEREAS, he was a loving husband of more than 60 years to his wife Patsy Moss McFerren until her death in 2016; and
WHEREAS, he was a nurturing father to his son Scott and daughter Karen, and proud grandparent to Justin, Clint, and Beau, as well as three great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, he was a charter member of the Brookwood Baptist Church in Shreveport; and
WHEREAS, Mr. McFerren was a thoughtful and friendly man; and
WHEREAS, he enjoyed telling stories and was always smiling; and
WHEREAS, his presence will be sorely missed.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System hereby commends Mr. Johnny McFerren for his service to the Board and the State of Louisiana.
