LA TECH HONORS LONGTIME PRESIDENT

The Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System approved Louisiana Tech’s request to name its Biomedical Engineering Building the Daniel D. Reneau Biomedical Engineering Building.

Reneau is a two-time LA Tech degree earner and served the institution for nearly half a century including twenty-six years as president, the longest term to date in the university’s history. He was instrumental in the 1972 development of the university’s biomedical engineering department, one of the first of its kind in the country.

“Every type of student success originated with Dr. Reneau,” Louisiana Tech President Les Guice said. “He is relentless in his passion and dedication to all of higher ed and to engineering across the nation.”

Dr. Guice presented a rendering of the newly titled building produced by a fifth-year architecture student.

UL SYSTEM PARTNERS WITH OPEN WATERS MARITIME INITIATIVE

The UL System announced a partnership with the Open Waters initiative to bring awareness and diversity to the critically important maritime industry.

Open Waters is an alliance between the Crescent River Port Pilots and the New Orleans-Baton Rouge Steamship Pilots Association to increase awareness and bring diversity to the maritime industry. The UL System is positioned to create maritime degree programs, offer internships, scholarships, and mentorships.

Captain Lee Jackson and Captain Strother Sacra joined today’s Board meeting virtually to express excitement for the future of the partnership.

“We are creating a platform where we can educate young minds on the possibilities, advocate for the industry, and finally empower a System that doesn’t leave our most vulnerable behind,” Captain Jackson said.

UL System member institutions are developing programs aligned with maritime industry needs.

FUTURE OF ACADEME

In order to reach the aspirations set forth in the Universities of Louisiana Strategic Framework, we are introducing a new initiative to recruit, retain, and cultivate the next generation of faculty and staff leaders. The inaugural Future of Academe event is being held March 9, the evening before the For Our Future Conference.

UL System graduate students pursuing or who have recently completed terminal degrees and are actively seeking faculty or professional staff positions or who have plans to work in academia are invited to attend. Attendees will have the opportunity to visit with provosts, deans, diversity officers, faculty attendees and human resources specialists from UL System member institutions about current and upcoming faculty and staff positions.

We encourage faculty to pass this information along to graduate students who are planning their futures in academia. Learn more about Future of Academe and our inaugural event at ulsystem.edu/faculty-staff/future-of-academe/.
