Responding to speculation that Louisiana could close public colleges and universities to meet a possible $300 million budget cut, NSU President Dr. Jim Henderson said last week, “We will keep a eye on the budget and participate in the discussion, but this university will prioritize serving students just as it has for 130 years.”

Health care and higher education take the brunt of the cuts since they are not constitutionally protected.

NSU budget cuts began in 2009. In 2008, the State funds accounted for 70 percent of the budget where in 2013, that share was down to 38 percent.

“Higher education leaders, legislators, policy makers and other stakeholders are currently evaluating all options. From a Northwestern State perspective, we are focused on providing the best experience possible to students and delivering solutions to employers,” Henderson said.
