UL SYSTEM STATEMENT REGARDING DEATH OF ELSIE BURKHALTER
Elsie Burkhalter committed her life to enhancing education in Louisiana. She was a pivotal member of the Board of Supervisors for the University of Louisiana System for 18 years including serving as the Board’s first African American female Board Chair.
During her tenure on the Board she participated in university presidential searches for Southeastern Louisiana University, Grambling State University, McNeese State University and University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Burkhalter was appointed to the Board by Governor Edwin Edwards in 1993 and reappointed by Governor Mike Foster and Governor Kathleen Blanco in 1999 and 2005 respectively.
